![]() How philosophy used to be more something like today's psychology. Overall, ignoring the slow beginning of the book is a great read. You may skip earlier chapters and directly take these. A good point is you may skip practice if you are not comfortable with it (I skipped a few), they can be read in random order. Without them, the book might be plain philosophy 1.0 class reference book. This part covers around 60% and I think its justified. Many of them are situational practices as well. These practices actually talk about real-world behavior (rather than plan theory). I somehow follow this from a very young ageĦ) Othr-ized This is something new I learned from this bookħ) What do you have to show for your years? Well, I did not agree or cannot observe all these practices, I have listed down few which I liked and would not mind following as well.Ģ) Consider everything borrows from natureģ) Negative Visualization - Foreseeing bad stuff. The gem of the book is 55 practice of stoicism. Largely divided into two parts, what is good (positive) and bad (negative energy) and how it effect us. Follow by that comes basic concepts explanation of some fundamental stoicism fellowship. It covers how the concept came into existence and how it evolved and declined during the spread of the Christian religion. This section covers some ancient (Roman/Greek) preacher (yes because they observed the same values in life). Those who are not sure what the book is all about can make a judgment by checking the first chapter. The first part (15-20%) covers the basic idea of what is stoicism. But I was proved wrong, just like the time of "Art of War" by Sun Tzu. So this is how I landed up to this book.Īnother reason why we selected this book was the word "The Little Book" I thought it would be a quick read. ![]() Description of the word was related to philosophy so I said yes as with just one book I can tick mark non-fiction and foreign author both. Frankly speaking, I was not aware of the word (subject) in detail when I first saw the cover & title. Till now we have tried biographies, parenting, memoirs, business cases/concepts, even, and semi herbology, but philosophy is the first time for us. We also give certain % books/slot assigned to foreign authors as variation/diversity brings new ideas/information for us. ![]() ![]() Testing against the API layer on the Component Level Newman is an official open-source project associated with Postman. Moreover, Newman can successfully function with collections located within Postman’s SaaS platform, files on the local file system, and files within a version control system that follows the official collection format. In essence, collections can be run using this open-source tool. Postman change on the 15th of September 2023 System Testing against the API layer is a vital part of software development, as it ensures that the APIs are functioning correctly and meeting the expected requirements. However, not all API testing tools are created equal. In this blog post, I will compare and contrast two types of API testing tools: code based open source tools and GUI based tools like Postman or Insomnia. While Postman and Insomnia have both value in the context of exploratory API Testing – I will argue that code based open source tools are better for automated API system testing, especially in terms of maintainability and integration into existing development infrastructures. Postman is a great tool for exploratory API Testing. However, it is not the best tool for automated API system testing and there will be a change in September which can result in higher costs for using Postman. In this blog post, I will explain why from my perspective code based open source tools are often better for automated API system testing than GUI based tools like Postman or Insomnia. I will also provide some recommendations which tool to use for which technology stack. ![]() Alternatives to Postman for Exploratory and Automated API Testing ![]() ![]() ![]() This isn’t always true, but as a general rule, typefaces that come in a lot of different weights tend to be crafted with more care and attention to detail than typefaces with fewer weights. If you're handing designs to a developer or building a design yourself, you'll need to define either a hard-pixel value or a rem/em value (e.g. Unfortunately, Figma only allows you to define a % value for letter spacing in text styles, which doesn't mirror CSS. Don't go overboard though, a little goes a long way and helps display text look and feel tighter. However, if you're using the same typeface for both body text and display test, it is often a good idea to tweak letter spacing to the display text style to make it more legible in larger sizing. Inter is an excellent choice - it's clean, consistent, and uncomplicated design features make it suitable for use at all sizes. Often, typefaces are designed with an intended usage in mind - they're optimized to be a display typeface (for larger headings), or body text (smaller body copy etc.) In general, text type is designed to be legible and readable at small sizes.ĭon't worry, you don't necessarily need to choose a separate typeface for display and text. Optimizing letter spacing for display text We’ve stress-tested Untitled UI’s typographic scale across dozens of projects to make sure it’s robust enough to use across (almost) any project. For example, if your display text is 60px, set the line height to ~1.2 or 72px and see how that looks. As a general rule for display text (headings etc.), aiming for 1 to 1.25x is usually a safe bet. To complicate things further, there is an inverse relationship between font size and appropriate line height - the larger the text, the smaller the line height should be. For example, if your body text is 16px, set the line height to 1.5 or 24px. Determining the correct line height can differ between different typefaces and sizes, so it’s important to adjust and experiment until it looks and “feels” right - it’s not an exact science.Īs a general rule (and a good starting point), body text should be between 1.5 to 2x the text size, depending on the width and length of the content. Website headers are a great example of where a display typeface should be used.Īs a general rule, “text” styles should be used for the majority of informational copy and body copy (paragraph text, labels, UI elements) and small sizes in user interfaces, while larger “display” styles should be reserved for headings (H1-H6).ĭetermining the correct line height for a text styles is important to ensure legibility. What does “Display” mean?Ī display text style or display typeface is intended for use at large sizes for headings, rather than for extended passages of body text. Each typeface listed in this post is free to use for both personal projects and commercial use.īut first, let's spend a bit of time on typography basics to help you make the most of modern fonts. We've written this post to help you choose the absolute best free fonts for modern web design. These are web safe fonts that are tried and true, but they can make your UI design look dated. Paired with great copywriting, understanding the basics of effective typography is a powerful force multiplier to help you stand out, choose the perfect font for each project, and improve user experiences.įont choices can be hard and it's easy to fall back on "safe fonts" like Roboto, Times New Roman, or Lato. Partly because good typography skills are difficult to master. Often, designers fall back on trends rather than carefully considering the best fonts for creative projects. It reflects badly on the brand and leads to a poor user experience, even if users can’t pinpoint why. Even to non-design-oriented folks, bad typography is easy to spot. I've always felt that good typography is the most undervalued and underappreciated elements in modern product and UI design.īad typography, by contrast, sticks out. It often goes unnoticed in good design, but good type design and a the perfect font can elicit emotion, guide attention and even create a typographical identity. That’s why even a rudimentary understanding of typography means you can determine for yourself the best fonts for modern UI design and for different design projects. If your users are unable to read your websites due to bad typography or small sizes, you can say goodbye to them immediately. Choosing the right fonts for your designs is not about just choosing web safe fonts or the best free fonts. The typography system is one of the most foundational parts of user interface design. ![]() ![]() ![]() “This is an excellent catch,” says Will Strafach, founder of Sudo Security Group and developer of the Guardian Firewall app for iOS.I've never had a problem with Apple's 30% fee. While not unheard of on iOS, it’s much more rare, especially with this level of sophistication. ![]() Security firm ESET announced just yesterday that it found 42 Google Play Store adware apps, downloaded millions of times. Apple’s been through that on a larger scale than this in 2015, some developer forums hosted versions of its Xcode software tool with data-stealing code appended to it, resulting in dozens of infected apps sneaking onto devices.Īdware’s a less severe problem, and again, it’s downright endemic to Android. Developers sometimes incorporate code from third-party or unauthorized sources to build out their apps borrowing from the wrong bin can easily-and accidentally-turn a speedometer app into something malicious. And in fairness, it’s entirely plausible that they had no idea that its apps were behaving this way. In an email, AppAspect Technologies pleaded ignorance, saying that it only found out about the issue after Apple had removed its apps, and that it’s working its way back to compliance. At that point, it would reach out to its boss-the command and control server-which would instruct the app to turn your iPhone into an invisible click farm. If you downloaded one of these apps, it would act perfectly normal until it was reasonably confident that you’re a genuine mark. More important, in this case it was effective. In this case, the presence of a SIM card indicates that the phone belongs to a real person rather than a security researcher-or one of the many humans that screen apps for App Store approval. “They had the intelligence to not just wait a few days, but to actually wait for other pieces of context to line up in the way that the developer wanted them to,” Covington says. And while the worst effects you’d feel as a victim in this case would be a quicker battery drain and a higher data bill, this latest wave of iOS malware is most notable not for what it does but for how it got there. That sort of adware makes regular appearances on Android, in part because that platform’s third-party app stores are riddled with bad actors. Instead, the apps, which ranged from a calculator to a yoga pose repository, ran invisible ads in the background of the device, generating phony website clicks to inflate ad revenues. While they were live, they didn’t steal data or gain control of a victim’s device, behavior that other recent iOS fumbles could have enabled. ![]() The malicious apps-17 of which were discovered by mobile security company Wandera, all from the same developer, while Apple spotted another using the same technique-have already been taken down. Proportion of life spent in 'good health' (%) Table 1 Life expectancy and healthy life expectancy by deprivation decile: England The male–female difference in life expectancy is greater in more deprived areas: for example, females in the most deprived areas live 4.8 years longer than males, compared with a difference of 3.1 years in the least deprived areas. These conditions are potentially preventable: smoking and obesity, the main risk factors, are higher among more deprived groups. About one-third of these inequalities in life expectancy are caused by higher mortality rates from heart and respiratory disease, and lung cancer in more deprived areas. In 2018–20, males in the least deprived 10 per cent of areas in England could expect to live almost a decade longer than males in the 10 per cent most deprived areas for females the difference was 8 years. People living in more affluent areas live significantly longer than people living in deprived areas ( see Table 1). Life expectancy is closely related to the overall level of deprivation in an area. Life expectancy is affected by many factors, for example, behavioural risks to health such as smoking and a poor diet access to and use of health care wider socio-economic determinants such as income, education, housing and employment geography and specific characteristics such as sex, ethnicity, disability and social exclusion. Disability-free life expectancy is an estimate of the number of years lived without a self-reported long-lasting physical or mental health condition that limits daily activities. cHealthy life expectancy is an estimate of the number of years lived in ‘very good’ or ’good’ general health, based on how individuals perceive their general health.Similarly, disability-free life expectancy is almost two decades shorter than life expectancy, and is higher among males (62.4 years) than females (60.9 years). And although females live an average of 3.7 years longer than males, most of that time (3 years) is spent in poor health. In 2018–20 a female in England could expect to live 83.1 years, of which 19.3 years (23 per cent) would have been spent in ‘not good’ health. Although a male in England could expect to live 79.4 years in 2018–20, his average healthy life expectancy was only 63.1 years – ie, he would have spent 16.3 of those years (20 per cent) in ‘not good’ health. Has also increased over time, but not as much as life expectancy, so more years are spent in poor health. Life expectancy can also be calculated for specific ages, eg, age 65, which is the average lifespan for a 65-year-old person if current death rates at ages 65 and over do not change. However, if rates are falling, actual life spans will be higher than life expectancy calculated using current death rates. bLife expectancy at birth is defined as how long, on average, a newborn can expect to live if current death rates do not change. ![]() The article refers throughout to life expectancy at birth.
